PM Shehbaz Sharif Axes Dozens of FBR Officials for Non-Compliance

The government is punishing some officials from the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) just before they start working on the budget for the next year. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif isn’t happy with how the FBR is doing its job, especially with stopping smuggling and managing trade with Afghanistan.

They’ve moved around many important people in the FBR, like the Member Inland Revenue (Policy) and the Member Customs (Operations), according to a notice released on Friday.

As per the notification, 13 important Members/Director Generals of the Board and two Chief Commissioners Inland Revenue have been moved to become Members (Admin Pool), Federal Board of Revenue (Hq), Islamabad.

These individuals include Mukarram Jah Ansari (Pakistan Customs Service/BS-22), who was a Member, (Legal & Accounting-Customs) FBR (Hq), Islamabad; Shah Bano G.M Khan (Inland Revenue Service/BS-21), who served as Director General, (IOCO) FBR (Hq), Islamabad

Dr. Fareed Iqbal Qureshi (Pakistan Customs Service/BS-21), previously the Member, (Customs Operations) FBR (Hq), Islamabad; Tariq Mustafa Khan (Inland Revenue Service/BS-21), who was a Member, (Accounting) FBR (Hq), Islamabad; and Ahmad Rauf (Pakistan Customs Service/BS-21), who held the position of Director General, Directorate General of Law & Prosecution, Islamabad.

More government officials have been moved to different positions. For example, Mirza Mubashir Baig, who works in the Pakistan Customs Service, is now the Director General of Customs Valuation in Karachi. Hyder Ali Dharejo, from the Inland Revenue Service, is now the Chief Commissioner of Regional Tax Office I in Karachi. Muhammad Azam Sheikh, also from the Inland Revenue Service, is now the Director General of Internal Audit in Islamabad.

Others who have been moved include Muhammad Saleem, Abdul Wahid Uqaily, Afaque Ahmed Qureshi, and Khurshid Ahmad Khan Marwat. Asim Majid Khan, who was previously working as a Member (Legal-IR), has been reassigned as a Member (Admin Pool). This transfer happened due to a complaint from a tobacco company. Earlier, Chief Commissioner LTU Yousif Hyder Shaikh was suspended for similar reasons.

Additionally, the Prime Minister has set up a new inquiry team chaired by the Secretary of Finance. This team will investigate why the Track and Trace System wasn’t implemented properly in four sectors. The Prime Minister wasn’t happy with the previous committee led by Tariq Bajwa, which failed to identify responsible officers.

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has also announced the transfer and posting of 22 officers from the Inland Revenue Service and 14 officers from the Pakistan Customs Service.
