China Hosts Launch Event for Pakistan’s Hangor-Class Submarine

A big step forward for Pakistan’s defense happened when they launched the first Hangor-class submarine at the Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group’s (WSIG) Shuangliu Base.

This submarine, which is being built for the Pakistan Navy by China, marks a significant development. Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) Admiral Naveed Ashraf was present at the ceremony.

As part of an agreement between China and Pakistan, China agreed to provide Pakistan with eight modern submarines.

According to the Transfer of Technology (ToT) agreement, four of these submarines will be constructed by WSIG, while the other four will be built at KS&EW.

These submarines are equipped with advanced stealth features and will have state-of-the-art weapons and sensors. This allows them to effectively operate in environments with multiple threats, capable of engaging targets from a distance.

During the ceremony, Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) Ashraf emphasized the importance of maritime security in today’s geopolitical landscape. He also reiterated the navy’s dedication to upholding peace and stability in the region.

Additionally, Beijing is investing more than $65 billion in energy and infrastructure ventures in Pakistan through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

This initiative is a significant part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, aimed at providing China with a shorter and more secure trade route to the Middle East and other regions, while also stimulating Pakistan’s economy.

CNS Ashraf also mentioned that the Hangor-class submarine project will “further strengthen the enduring friendship between Pakistan and China and demonstrates the robust military cooperation between the two nations.”

Back in February of this year, Pakistan began building the 6th Hangor-class submarine at KS&EW. Pakistan and China have strong military relations, and just last year, the Pakistan Navy welcomed two newly constructed Chinese Type 054 A/P frigates into its fleet.
