Tandoor Shutdown Looms Naanbai Association Reacts To Roti Price Drop

The group that represents naan and roti makers in Punjab, called the Muttahida Naanbai Roti Association, strongly disagrees with the new rules to lower the prices of naan and roti in Punjab.

After the Punjab government said the most you can charge for roti is Rs 16, the Nanbai Association has given a 96-hour deadline, demanding that the cost of flour should also be decreased.

Tandoor Shutdown Looms Naanbai Association Reacts To Roti Price Drop

The Nanbai Association is not happy about the government’s actions against tandoor shops in Punjab. They want the price of a 20kg bag of flour to be set at Rs 1600 so they can sell roti for Rs 16.

If the government doesn’t agree, the Association says they will go on strike across the province.

Islamabad reduces price

On Monday, the capital administration decided that Roti should be sold for Rs16 and Naan for Rs20. A notification from the district magistrate’s office stated that each Roti weighing 120 grams would cost Rs16, while each Naan of the same weight would cost Rs20.

Despite this, Roti is being sold for prices ranging between Rs20 and Rs25 in the capital. For example, in G-8, it is being sold for Rs20, while in E-11, it is being sold for Rs25. The notification clarified that these new rates would stay in place until further notice.

It also warned that violating these rates could lead to punishment under Section 6 and 7 of the Price Control, Prevention of Profiteering and Hoarding Act 1977 and the West Pakistan Food Stuffs (Control) Act 1958.

Following the notification, the Secretariat assistant commissioner met with the Naanbai association and others to discuss the new prices. It’s noted that in June 2023, the capital administration set the price of Roti weighing 120 grams at Rs18, but the price of Naan remained unchanged.

Additionally, they suggest that the cost of a 20kg bag of fine flour should be fixed at Rs 7,500 so they can sell naan for Rs 20.

It’s important to note that Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced through X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday that the provincial government has immediately lowered the price of roti to Rs 16.
