Power Generation Down 8.2% Despite Monthly Lower Fuel Costs

Electricity production in the country went down by 8.2 percent compared to last year, reaching 8,023 gigawatts per hour (GWh) in March 2024. Over the first nine months of the fiscal year 2024, it decreased by 1.2 percent to 92,450 GWH compared to the same period in the previous year.

Compared to February 2024, there was a 12.5 percent increase in power generation in March 2024.

Power Generation Down 8.2% Despite Monthly Lower Fuel Costs

The cost of fuel for power generation rose by 1.1 percent compared to last year, averaging Rs. 8.31 per unit in March 2024. However, the actual power generation in March 2024 was 10.4 percent lower than the expected amount. This decrease in generation is likely to lead to higher capacity charges for the fourth quarter of the fiscal year 2024, as stated by Arif Habib Limited.

The main sources of power during March 2024 were from hydropower (27.6 percent), nuclear (25.8 percent), RLNG (20.7 percent), and coal (10.7 percent).

Hydropower generation increased by 10.8 percent compared to last year, reaching 2,217 GWh in March 2024 from 2,002 GWh in March 2023. Month-on-month, there was a significant increase of 25.5 percent. From July to March of fiscal year 2024, it rose by 8.3 percent compared to the same period last year.

Coal-based power generation decreased by 18.8 percent to 862 GWh in March 2024 from 1,062 GWh last year. Month-on-month, there was a decrease of 13.3 percent.

Nuclear power generation increased by 3.4 percent to 2,070 GWh in March 2024 from 2,002 GWh last year. Monthly nuclear power generation increased by 24.7 percent compared to the previous month.

RLNG-based power generation decreased by 7.1 percent to 1,658 GWh in March 2024 from 1,785 GWh last year, but it increased by 14.3 percent compared to February 2024.

Solar-based generation decreased by 0.7 percent to 110 GWh in March 2024 from 111 GWh last year. During the first nine months of fiscal year 2024, it fell by 6.2 percent compared to the same period last year, reaching 674 GWh from 719 GWh.

Fuel Cost

In March 2024, the cost of fuel for power generation went up by 1.1 percent compared to last year. However, it decreased by 4.4 percent compared to the previous month, reaching an average of Rs. 8.31 per unit. This is in contrast to Rs. 8.22 per unit in March 2023 and Rs. 8.7 per unit in February 2024.

For the first nine months of fiscal year 2024, fuel costs decreased by 4.2 percent compared to last year, with an average cost of Rs. 8.75 per unit, compared to Rs. 9.14 per unit in the same period in fiscal year 2023.
