The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) expects a big increase in monsoon rainfall this year.
They predict it will be 40 to 60 percent more than last year. This raises worries about the possibility of floods in various areas of the country.
This year, Northern Punjab, Southern Sindh, and parts of Balochistan are likely to get more rain than usual. Sindh might receive 40-60% more rain than normal, Balochistan could experience unusual rainfall, and Northern Punjab might have near-normal rainfall.
In total, Pakistan is expected to get over 30% more rainfall than usual.
The heavy rain combined with higher temperatures during the monsoon season might lead to the melting of glaciers. This could cause Glacier Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan.
The NDMA Tech Team recently met to talk about identifying areas at risk of Glacier Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) and creating detailed maps to show where floods might happen and how they could affect different areas.
He said, “By collaborating and sharing important information, we can better safeguard our communities and minimize the impact of natural disasters.” He added that this meeting shows their dedication to being prepared for disasters and building resilience.

The NDMA advises people in these areas to stay alert and take necessary precautions. Efforts are being made to reduce the impact of potential floods by strengthening river banks and improving drainage systems.
People living in Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been cautioned about much hotter daytime temperatures expected to be 4 to 6 degrees Celsius higher than usual. Additionally, there may be wind and thundershowers in these areas.
