Uber Shuts Down Operations in Pakistan

Following the cessation of operations in Islamabad, Karachi, Multan, and various other cities in 2022, Uber has recently ceased its services in Lahore as well.

The ride-hailing platform abruptly became unavailable in the city, lacking any forewarning or official announcements. A representative from Uber conveyed to Pakistanalerts.

Uber Shuts Down Operations in Pakistan

We have chosen to discontinue the use of the Uber app in Pakistan. However, our subsidiary brand, Careem, will continue to provide ride-hailing services throughout Pakistan via the Careem app, ensuring earning opportunities for drivers.

In October 2022, Uber halted its operations through the Uber app in Karachi, Multan, Faisalabad, Peshawar, and Islamabad. Up until today’s announcement, the Uber app remained accessible solely in Lahore.

The spokesperson explained that this decision aligns with Uber’s global expansion strategy, emphasizing markets with potential for sustainable development.

When attempting to access the Uber app, a message is displayed stating: “Uber is no longer available in Lahore. You can utilize Careem and enjoy a 50% discount on 5 rides using code LHR50.”

Additionally, the company has directly communicated to its customers regarding the cessation of its services:

“We’ve reached the challenging decision to discontinue Uber app services in Lahore effective April 30, 2024. However, ride-hailing services will persist through our subsidiary brand, Careem. You have the opportunity to register and request trips seamlessly on Careem for continued service.”

To mitigate the impact, Uber is extending a compensation offer through its subsidiary, Careem, which is under Uber’s ownership. By utilizing the code LHR50, Careem users can enjoy a 50% discount on their next five rides.

An email statement has clarified that Uber will promptly reach out to users who have remaining cash balances in their accounts to facilitate refunds. Although the specific timeline for refund processing remains uncertain, the company assures users that refunds will be issued “in due course.”

As reiterated earlier, Careem will maintain its regular operations across all cities, providing an alternative option for former Uber customers. It’s worth noting that Careem Rides operates in 10 cities throughout Pakistan, including Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar, Multan, Faisalabad, Abbottabad, Gujranwala, Sialkot, and Quetta.
