The Sindh government has declared May 1st a public holiday across the province to celebrate Labour Day.
The Chief Secretary of Sindh released a notice confirming that the whole province will observe this public holiday.
According to a circular from the cabinet division, all schools, colleges, and public and private offices in Sindh will be closed on May 1st to observe Labour Day. It is expected that the federal government and the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) will also announce May 1st as a public holiday.
Labour Day, also known as May Day, became a national holiday in Pakistan in 1972, when the country’s first Labour policy was introduced. Since gaining independence in 1947, Pakistan has been part of the International Labour Organization (ILO), having approved 36 of its conventions, including all eight core conventions.

Labour Day is celebrated with different activities like rallies, processions, union meetings, seminars, and organized street demonstrations. During these events, union leaders and civil society members give speeches to talk about the history of Labour Day, support workers’ rights, and show solidarity with workers around the world.
