The Deputy Commissioner of Hyderabad recently declared plans to levy penalties on parents who decline to vaccinate their children against polio.
As per an official notification, Deputy Commissioner Tariq Qureshi has been granted the authority to enforce fines under Section 1. Alongside fines, parents who opt against polio vaccination for their children may also be subject to potential imprisonment.
The notification outlined that such parents would face a fine of Rs. 50,000 and potential imprisonment for a month. The Deputy Commissioner emphasized the importance of public support for the government’s polio eradication efforts by ensuring their children receive vaccination.
It’s worth noting that a nationwide vaccination campaign commenced yesterday aimed at immunizing over 24 million children under the age of five against poliovirus. This campaign will cover vaccination activities in Islamabad, 10 districts of Punjab, 24 districts of Sindh, 26 districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and 30 districts of Balochistan.

As per the PM’s Coordinator on National Health Services, Dr. Malik Mukhtar Ahmed Bharath, poliovirus has been identified in numerous sewage samples across the country in recent months.
Dr. Bharath emphasized that the prevention of polio solely relies on administering polio drops to children.
