Gary Kirsten Excited to Join Pakistan Team. In a recent podcast hosted by the Pakistan Cricket Board, Gary Kirsten, a retired South African cricketer, discussed his perspectives on taking on the coaching role for Pakistan.
He expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Pakistani players and outlined his plans to contribute positively to the national team’s performance in limited-overs cricket. Kirsten emphasized his belief in his tactical abilities and his intention to bring stability to Pakistan cricket.
He acknowledged that he hadn’t closely followed Pakistan’s white-ball cricket until the PCB approached him. However, Kirsten mentioned that he had fondly observed the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and was acquainted with numerous Pakistani cricketers and emerging local talents.
Expressing his excitement, Kirsten mentioned his eagerness to collaborate with renowned Pakistani cricketers like Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Rizwan, and Haris Rauf. He stated his intention to delve into understanding what motivates them and how he can support them in maximizing their potential.
Kirsten emphasized the primary role of coaches in enabling the team to perform at its peak. He pledged to dedicate all efforts towards facilitating the team’s success, stating, “Our role is really to enable the team to play at its best. That is the job of the coaches. We’ll do everything in our power to make sure that we attempt to do that.”
The 56-year-old underscored the importance of clear communication from the Pakistan Cricket Board regarding their realistic goals. He emphasized that winning one of the three major ICC tournaments would constitute a significant achievement for the team.

Regarding the prospect of collaborating with Azhar Mahmood, Kirsten expressed enthusiasm, considering Mahmood’s profound understanding of both the players and the cricketing environment. He described it as a great opportunity to work alongside Mahmood, recognizing his expertise in the field.
The former World Cup winner mentioned that he had competed against Azhar Mahmood numerous times during his playing career. Now, being on the same team, Kirsten expressed his eagerness to collaborate with Mahmood for the betterment of Pakistan cricket.
