The Federal Ministry of Education has made the decision to stop the centralized examination system for grade 5 in schools overseen by the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE). This choice aims to reduce exam stress and anxiety, as well as to eliminate unnecessary comparisons and competition among students, as stated by the education ministry.
The ministry also emphasized the importance of ensuring teachers’ accountability through ongoing summative internal diagnostic assessments. Despite discontinuing centralized exams, these internal assessments will continue.
After careful consideration, a decision has been made to halt the centralized examination system for grade 5 in FDE schools. This decision aims to reduce exam stress and anxiety while eliminating unnecessary comparison and competition among peers.
“We believe that learning extends far beyond the stress of exams and that the early years of schooling should be joyful and enriching,” the education ministry stated.
Additionally, the ministry announced a variety of co-curricular activities and non-assessed initiatives aimed at providing children with opportunities for holistic development and exploration beyond traditional academic measures.
Earlier this month, teachers responsible for conducting centralized primary and middle standard exams voiced concerns about unpaid remuneration and the expenses they’ve shouldered during exam duties over the past three years.

Feeling disappointed by unmet promises and financial strain, these teachers have urged authorities to switch to local exams to ease their difficulties. Despite assurances from the FDE, they claim they haven’t received the compensation they deserve for conducting exams and grading papers.
It’s worth noting that the FDE previously arranged centralized examinations annually for grades five and eight. Students from private schools were also permitted to take part in these exams.
Speaking to a local media outlet, an FDE official mentioned that the eighth-grade exam will continue to be conducted as usual.
