The first book published by Allama Iqbal in Urdu is “Bang-e-Dra” (بانگ درا). It was published in 1924 and is a collection of his poetry, comprising poems written in various periods of his life. “Bang-e-Dra” is considered a seminal work in Urdu literature and played a significant role in shaping the literary and philosophical landscape of the subcontinent. I am deeply honored to be invited to speak on this occasion. It is yet another testament to the hospitality that Pakistan, and particularly Lahore, consistently extends to visiting scholars like myself. I must emphasize that my presence here is not a reflection of my status as an Iqbal scholar.

Pakistan has been truly blessed with two remarkable founding figures: Mr. Jinnah, a politician of genuine wisdom, and Allama Iqbal, your national poet and philosopher. While as a nation, you may not always have followed their wishes, they stand as patient guides whose wisdom remains accessible whenever needed.

I must admit that I do not claim any expertise on Iqbal, his writings, or his philosophy. In contemporary Pakistan, Iqbal is primarily known for his theological masterpiece, “The Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam,” and his Urdu poetry. However, his Persian poetry is less widely read, perhaps due to Pakistan’s shift towards English and Urdu.

Yet, there is one aspect of Iqbal’s work where I can offer some insight: his seminal book, “The Development of Metaphysics in Persia.” This book, his doctoral dissertation at Munich, was based on extensive research conducted in Germany, England, and under the guidance of the orientalist Thomas Arnold in Lahore. Despite being somewhat overlooked, this work tackles aspects of Islamic philosophy that remained unexplored for nearly half a century, gaining recognition only in the 1970s.

Understanding the significance of Iqbal’s contributions requires some knowledge of the history of Western scholarship on Islamic philosophy. Initially, European scholars focused on philosophers whose works were translated into Latin in Spain during the 12th century, such as Ibn Sina, Ghazali, and Ibn Rushd. Unfortunately, this led to an oversight of later Persian philosophers who made significant contributions to Islamic thought. It wasn’t until scholars like Henry Corbin, M. M. Sharif, and Fazlur Rahman recognized the importance of these later philosophers that a more comprehensive understanding of Islamic philosophy emerged.

Which is the First Book of Allama Iqbal?

Iqbal’s “The Development of Metaphysics in Persia” stands out for its originality and systematic approach. Unlike many contemporary works, which focus on specific philosophers or schools, Iqbal sought to portray the entire history of Iranian metaphysical thought as a coherent and organic process. His methodology, inspired by Hegelian philosophy, aimed to understand the unfolding of Iranian thought over time, recognizing underlying patterns and developments.
