In the newest QS World University Rankings by Subject for 2024, eight universities from Pakistan did really well. This year, they checked over 16,300 academic programs in many different subjects. That’s more than 600 programs compared to last year!
The rankings for 2024 looked at 55 different subjects. They grouped them into five big categories: Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences and Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences and Management. They reviewed 1,559 universities worldwide for these rankings. And guess what? 64 universities were appearing in these rankings for the first time.
Several Pakistani universities have gained global recognition, including COMSATS University Islamabad, National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), University of the Punjab, Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Quaid-e-Azam University, Aga Khan University, Lahore University of Engineering and Technology (UET), and University of Agriculture Faisalabad.
NUST continues to uphold its tradition of excellence, leading the QS rankings once again. COMSATS University Islamabad and University of Engineering & Technology (UET) Lahore follow closely behind. Quaid-i-Azam University and University of the Punjab also secured significant positions in the rankings, showcasing the diverse academic talent in the country.
NUST’s outstanding performance in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024 is especially noteworthy. The university climbed 16 positions in the field of Engineering & Technology, securing the prestigious 144th spot globally. This remarkable achievement demonstrates NUST’s continued dominance in this field within Pakistan for the eighth consecutive year.
NUST has solidified its position among the top 200 universities globally in subjects like Computer Science, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, and Civil & Structural Engineering. Moreover, it has secured places among the top 300 universities in Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, and Mathematics. Notably, NUST has appeared for the first time in subjects such as Accounting & Finance, Economics & Econometrics, and Medicine, showing its versatility and evolving academic landscape.
The University of the Punjab also achieved significant milestones, with 19 subjects ranked in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024. Among these, Library and Information Management stands out, securing a remarkable position in the 50-70 range globally, marking a historic achievement for the university. Other ranked subjects include Petroleum Engineering, Languages, Linguistics, Mathematics, Pharmacy, Agriculture & Forestry, Physics & Astronomy, Engineering & Technology, and Chemical Engineering.
No Pakistani institute has been ranked in the subject category of Arts and Humanities.

QS employs five components to rank institutes in the World University Subject Rankings. These include:
- Academic reputation
- Employer reputation
- Research citations per paper
- H-index
- International Research Network
The first two indicators are international surveys of academics and employers, which assess the global reputation of institutions in each subject.

The second two indicators evaluate research impact and h-index for the relevant subject. For those unfamiliar, the h-index measures the impact and productivity of research. Data for these indicators is sourced from Scopus, the world’s most comprehensive research citation database.
The final indicator highlights the international research collaboration of an institution.
